Navigating Towards a Greener Future: The Role of Sustainable Marine Technology, Part 2
Sustainable marine technology can solve problems like emissions and energy use. The decarbonization and de-pollution agendas gave a start. Europe’s marine sector is focused on projects that reduce pollution, ship waste reception, and many more technologies and innovative solutions. A greener future for our oceans requires even more work, but it’s not impossible.
Clean Oceans and the Blue Economy OVERVIEW 2024 mentions that the ocean balances our climate by absorbing around 25% of CO2 emissions and around 90% of excess heat. Despite this, burning fossil fuels and overexploiting fish stocks have been detrimental to the health of the oceans and the planet for many decades. Sad as these facts may be, they can be addressed using sustainable marine technology, which can mitigate the problems the ocean is facing and further control the exploitation of resources.
The Importance of Sustainable Marine Technology
The maritime industry is changing under the influence of sustainable marine technology as new creative models that limit environmental concerns and boost productivity appear. Integration and implementation of renewable and alternative energy, such as solar energy, has improved the ability of marine vessels to reduce harmful emissions. Such innovations make it feasible to develop measures to minimize the adverse impacts of climate change.
Our previous article discussed the importance of technology for marine conservation. Part 2 of that series continues to dive deeper into sustainable marine technology.
Multifunctional Displays for Marine Conservation
Multifunctional displays are essential in marine preservation. These systems, equipped with radars, sonars and cameras, can monitor vessels and aquatic environments in real-time while on the ship’s path. MFDs can integrate data from marine sensors (e.g., sonar, cameras, drones) to monitor coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and other critical habitats. Real-time data visualization allows scientists and conservationists to detect ecosystem changes, such as coral bleaching, algal blooms, or habitat degradation.
An MFD aboard a research vessel could also display water quality data and help track pollution sources, which leads to identifying regions with rising contamination levels or ocean acidification. Such technologies help fight for the conservation of the environment and the developing green economy in the fishing and tourism business without degrading marine resources.
Beyond Displays: Emerging Technologies for Marine Conservation
Novel maritime products, like autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), enable researchers to gather information in the sea more efficiently while causing minimal disturbance. Gathering critical data on species’ health and habitat conditions helps monitor the flora and fauna and how they are affected. Drones with advanced imaging technology provide real-time surveillance of illegal fishing activities and help track marine wildlife.
- Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs): These uncrewed vehicles can travel through great ocean depths, gather data on the marine fauna and flora, including ecosystems, and gauge the pollution level.
- Satellite Imagery: High-resolution satellite images can track vessel movements, detect illegal fishing activities, and monitor changes in coastal ecosystems.
- Marine Robotics: Robotic technology with integrated sensors and cameras can be used to remove human-made ocean waste and surveil the coral formations’ health.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI applications can streamline and track a wide array of data to deliver useful insights and intervention measures about environmental trends.
